Setting up equipment to stream your event

You will need:

  1. A computer (laptop or desktop) either PC or MAC will work
  2. A video camera or webcam
  3. A method to interface the camera with the computer (we will explain this in detail later)
  4. A tripod
  5. A good audio source

You should test your ability to stream (using the equipment you plan to use) well before the event to enable time to problem solve. Sometimes certain hardware doesn’t work well together.

It’s best to use a video camera rather than a webcam to stream. Video cameras have a better field of view and they have the ability to zoom as well as the ability to placed on a tripod.

Methods to interface the camera to your computer

There are a couple of ways to connect a camera to your computer. Webcams have a simple USB connection but are not recommended. Most new video cameras have a firewire output. If your computer accepts a firewire connection, you can simply use a firewire cable to connect the two. If your computer or camera does not support firewire, you can purchase a USB capture device for around $15 on eBay. Simply search USB video capture on www.ebay.com. If you decide to purchase a USB capture device, you will need to make sure your camera has audio and video cables included with it in order the camera to this capture device.

Getting audio from a sound board

It’s best to get your audio from a sound board. Most facilities use a soundboard that allows microphones from the stage to be amplified. Most soundboards have an extra audio output that can be connected to the computers audio input or USB video capture audio input. Usually there will be some adapting of the connectors to facilitate this. A trained audio person should know what is needed to accomplish this.
