Split-Shift Parenting 'Hurts Families'
What is ‘shift’ parenting?
Shift parenting is an increasing phenomenon in our society. It occurs when dual-income couples have to work anti-social hours. One parent comes into the home as the other leaves resulting in little time being spent as a complete family unit. This style of parenting has been compared to children being “passed between parents like a baton in a relay race” or “tag-team parenting”.
The impact of ‘shift parenting’ has been recognized by the politicians. Harriet Harman who is standing for deputy labor leadership in the
UK said recently 'We need to have a debate about how we enable families to spend more time together. It's not just about the child having enough time with the mother or the father, it's about doing things as a family.'
