How Should I Pray?

Casting family cares on God in prayer

Financial problems result from unforeseen circumstances or mismanagement.  Whatever the reason, accept responsibility for your part.  Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve made bad choices, just look at what you’ve done and move on.

Ask God to give you His perspective on finances, wealth, prosperity and financial soundness.  Declare that your financial situation will not overwhelm you and renew your commitment to God.  Ask God for the faith, strength and provision necessary for the day at hand (Matthew 6:11, 25-34).

My husband lost his job and he’s our only source of income.  How should I pray?

The first issue to be resolved is who your source is, your husband or God.  If it’s your husband, then all of your financial needs and security rest on him.  This is too great a weight for him to carry.  Recognizing God as your source relieves the pressure from your husband, and releases God to provide for you.  When you pray, ask God to forgive you for not trusting Him completely for all your needs.  Then ask Him to help you accept His best for you and your family.  Next, ask God to provide for your family every day with what is needed for that day.  Finally, ask God to help you overcome the worry that threatens to overwhelm you.  Remember to thank God for all that He does each day.

I’m afraid we’re losing our teenage son.  He started hanging around with some boys who aren’t good role models.  How should I pray?

Teenagers are faced with some of the greatest challenges of their lives – changing bodies, raging hormones and peer pressure.  Ask God to draw your son to Him (John 6:44), and to send His light to penetrate the darkness surrounding him.  Pray for his safety and that God will direct him through the maze of choices that confront him daily.  Pray for his salvation if he isn’t saved, and apply the blood of Jesus to protect him in all his ways (Rev. 12:10-11).
