Mike and Marilyn Phillipps
(the combined ministries of Nova Shalom, Marriage Ministries International, and University of the Family)
In 1977 Mike and Marilyn's marriage was in deep trouble. Things had not been good in their marriage for a number of years, but now they had reached crisis point. Mike had met someone else and was divorcing Marilyn to marry the other woman. Marilyn was pregnant with their third child.
Every counselor that spoke with them, including their pastor, agreed that there was no hope for reconciliation of the marriage. People in the Church told Marilyn that since Mike had committed adultery, she was free to divorce and remarry. But the Lord had other plans.
The Holy Spirit prompted Marilyn to read 1 Corinthians 7:10,11, "Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife." From that point on, the Lord began to teach Marilyn how to stand in faith for her husband and her marriage. The first place He began to work was not in Michael, but in Marilyn. As she was healed and began to learn how to stand on God's Word, Mike's heart was changed and he eventually returned home.
That was just the beginning, though, because Mike and Marilyn did not know how to get the areas of wounding and pain between them healed. During the next few years God taught them how to heal and strengthen their marriage through the principles of His Word, the Bible. As they learned, they began sharing with other couples. Soon classes began in homes across the nation as other couples began sharing those principles as well.
Married for Life was birthed and now around the globe couples teach this course in their homes weekly. The materials are now translated into 40 languages and groups are held in over 90 nations. A premarital course, ONE for Life, was added in 2001 and in 2003 the Parents for Life course was released, and now U2R1 has been added to our list of courses.
The goal of 2=1 is to bring answers to marriages and families from God's blueprint, the Bible. There is no impossible situation or person and all families can be healed and strengthened through these life-giving principles.
Mike and Marilyn's goal is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. They believe that an army of couples teaching these courses in their homes will transform nations. When the family is strong, the Church is strong. And when the Church is strong, the nation is strong. Nations are being changed today, one family at a time by dedicated couples who are investing their lives into their neighborhoods and communities.
